Arrival of TWA Flight at Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam
And so it began. This is the way it would have looked when my TWA charter flight arrived at Bien Hoa Air Base in August of 1967. It ended a very long flight over the Pacific Ocean, with only two stops at Hawaii and Okinawa for refueling and flight crew changes. It also began my year-long tour of duty in Vietnam.
My orders said that I was assigned to 8th Aerial Port Squadron's Detachment 5, which was located at Bien Hoa Air Base. In reality, 8th Aerial Port (located at Ton Son Nhut AB in Saigon) could have assigned me anywhere within their command. However, as it turned out, I stayed at Detachment 5 at Bien Hoa for my entire year in Vietnam.
